Jasper Johns: "The Seasons"
|
|
4/24/1997 SAVANNAH, GA. — One of the most famous living artists of our time, Jasper Johns, has had a profound influence on the evolution of American art. Continuing its micro-museum series, “Centurions,” SCAD proudly presents a 50-piece exhibit of Johns’ work entitled “The Seasons.” The collection is characterized by a series of paintings and sculptures presenting commonplace objects that explore the relationship between art and reality, depicting the seasons of winter, spring, summer and fall. For Johns, painting is an intellectual activity in which the viewer completes the work. Johns was born in Augusta, Ga., and has many ties to the South. According to family legend, Jasper Johns is a descendent of Savannah’s Revolutionary war hero Sergeant William Jasper, who is immortalized in a statue in Madison Square. Concurrent to SCAD’s exhibition, a major Jasper Johns retrospective which earlier this year was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, will be on display at the Ludwig Museum, Cologne. After Germany, the collection will be showcased at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
